I knew I would like the atmosphere of a small school, but I didn’t realize quite how much.

When I came to Delta State as an instructor, I only intended to stay for two years. That was twenty-seven years ago. I can truthfully say that I grew up here: both chronologically and professionally, but I cannot think of a better place to grow up.

Upon my arrival I found a warm and inviting atmosphere. I knew I would like the atmosphere of a small school, but I didn’t realize quite how much. Smaller class size affords faculty the opportunity to get to know the students. It’s practically impossible to “fall through the cracks” under those circumstances. Faculty and staff know each other both on and off campus. Lasting friendships are made at DSU because people here genuinely care about each other.

My professional growth at Delta State has been most satisfying. I love to teach and DSU provides me with the opportunity to do so in an environment conducive to learning. As instructors, we are constantly encouraged to “spread our wings” through innovative methods and approaches. I have had the opportunity to develop and to teach new courses, as well as to oversee the composition program – all in an effort to place appropriate emphasis on the written word.

The students at Delta State are the best anywhere. They are intelligent, innovative, and industrious. I especially enjoy my interaction with them – both in and out of the classroom. When it comes to preparing our “leaders of tomorrow,” DSU is doing an exemplary job.
